Clogged Drain Plumber
How we handle these jobs
Read this before you book
Slow drains, gurgling fixtures and active backups do not all point to the same problem. One fixture may have a local blockage near its trap or branch line. Several fixtures acting up together may point to a shared building drain or main line. The symptoms, access and condition of the pipe determine what should happen next.
The Crazy Plumber provides clogged drain services for kitchens, showers, tubs, toilets, floor drains, laundry standpipes and main lines. The goal is to identify where flow is restricted, choose a suitable clearing or cleaning method and explain whether the blockage looks isolated or connected to a larger drainage problem.
How Drains Clog
Bathroom drains can collect hair, soap residue, toothpaste and body oils around stoppers, strainers, traps and rough interior surfaces. The opening may narrow gradually, so the first sign is often slower drainage rather than a sudden stop.
Kitchen lines can collect fats, oils, grease and food particles. Warm grease can travel into the branch line before cooling and adhering to the pipe wall. Coffee grounds, starches and fibrous scraps can add to the restriction, especially when the line already has buildup or limited flow.
Toilet and main line blockages may involve excess paper, wipes, hygiene products or other material that does not disperse like toilet paper. Roots, displaced joints, settlement, corrosion or damaged pipe can also contribute, but those conditions should be confirmed through inspection rather than assumed from the home’s age, neighbourhood or nearby trees.
One Fixture or Several? Reading the Symptoms
A single slow sink, tub or shower often suggests a restriction close to that fixture. When several fixtures slow down, gurgle or back up together, the problem may be in a shared branch, building drain or main line. A toilet that makes a nearby tub gurgle, or water appearing at a lower drain when another fixture is used, deserves more caution than an isolated slow sink.
If wastewater is actively backing up, stop using water in the affected area and avoid testing the system by running more fixtures. Additional water can increase the amount reaching the lowest available opening. Gurgling can be associated with restricted drainage or venting, so the sound is useful information, not a complete diagnosis.
What to Do Before Booking Drain Service
For a minor slow drain, check whether the stopper or strainer can be safely removed and cleaned. A plunger or simple hair-removal tool may help when the problem is close to the fixture and there is no active backup. Stop if the fixture begins to overflow, the blockage returns or another drain reacts.
Avoid mixing drain-cleaning products. If a chemical drain opener has already been used, tell the plumber what was added and when. Standing water may still contain the product, which changes how the area should be handled. Do not keep adding water or chemicals to an active backup.
How The Crazy Plumber Approaches a Clogged Drain
The service method should fit the fixture, access point, suspected blockage and condition of the pipe. A fixture auger may be suitable for a toilet or a blockage close to a sink, tub or shower. Cable equipment may be used to open or retrieve material from a branch or building drain. The correct access point and tool depend on the system in front of the plumber.
A camera inspection can help with recurring symptoms, shared-line problems or a blockage that suggests damage, roots or settlement, when the line is open enough and access allows it. Camera findings can support a repair recommendation, but the image still has to be interpreted in the context of pipe material, layout and the symptoms at the property.
Hydro jetting may be appropriate for grease, soft buildup, roots or deposits on the pipe wall. It is not the right method for every line. Pipe condition, access and service scope matter, and camera inspection before or after jetting is used when those conditions make it appropriate. If the pipe appears compromised, diagnosis or repair may come before aggressive cleaning.
Prevention and Property Conditions
Use strainers where they fit, remove collected hair and debris, and keep fats, oils and grease out of the kitchen drain. A garburator can reduce the size of some food waste, but it does not make grease or fibrous material disappear. Toilets should receive human waste and toilet paper, not wipes, paper towels, dental floss or hygiene products.
Floor drains and laundry standpipes also deserve attention. A floor-drain trap that loses its water seal can allow sewer odour into the space. A laundry standpipe or branch line can collect lint, detergent residue and other buildup. If water appears at a floor drain or standpipe when another fixture or appliance drains, stop adding water and have the shared drainage path assessed.
Property conditions change the diagnostic conversation. Building age and neighbourhood are not diagnoses. Renovation history, pipe material, shared versus private drainage, long runs, slope, settlement, nearby roots, cleanout access and finished spaces are more useful questions. Camera evidence should come before a claim that roots, a belly, collapse or replacement is the cause.
Straight Answers to Common Questions
Why did the clog return after plunging?
Plunging can restore movement without removing all the material that caused the restriction. A recurring clog may involve buildup farther along the line, a blockage that was only partly opened or a pipe condition that needs inspection. The next step depends on which fixtures are affected and what the line shows after clearing.
Is the blocked line my responsibility or the municipality’s?
Responsibility depends on the municipality, the type of property and the location of the blockage or damage. Strata and shared-building systems can add another layer. Camera evidence may help identify where the issue appears, but current municipal or strata rules should be confirmed before responsibility is assigned. If neighbouring properties are affected at the same time, contact the municipality or building manager as well as a plumber.
Do products labelled flushable still affect drains?
They can. Many wipes remain intact longer than toilet paper and can catch on rough joints, roots or existing buildup. The safer household rule is to flush only human waste and toilet paper.
Do I need hydro jetting?
Not necessarily. Some blockages are appropriately handled with a fixture auger or cable. Hydro jetting may be useful when material coats the pipe wall or keeps contributing to repeat restrictions, but access and pipe condition must be considered first.
Get Help With a Clogged Drain
If a drain is slow, note which fixtures are affected and whether the symptom changes when another fixture or appliance drains. If wastewater is actively backing up, stop using water in the affected area.
