About this service

Install Tankless Water Heater

Tankless Water Heater Installation is the service for a new tankless system or a tank-to-tankless conversion. The assessment determines whether tankless fits the household and property before equipment is selected.

A conversion can affect the gas supply, venting, condensate drainage, electrical supply, water connections and equipment location. The design must also match the household’s simultaneous hot water demand and the selected manufacturer’s performance information at the required temperature rise. A storage-tank replacement may be the better option when the supporting work, demand profile or homeowner priorities do not favour tankless.

What the Installation Assessment Covers

Demand and temperature rise. Tankless sizing uses the incoming-water temperature, desired outlet temperature, simultaneous fixture demand and the selected manufacturer’s flow table at the required temperature rise. Do not size from household count or a fixed number of showers.

Gas supply. The selected appliance’s input must be assessed with the meter, regulator, piping and other connected gas appliances. Some properties need gas-supply changes, while others do not. Exact pressure and pipe-capacity decisions require the selected equipment and current utility and authorization requirements.

Venting and combustion air. Vent material, length, slope, termination and intake requirements vary by model and installation. The proposed location must provide a compliant route and practical service access.

Condensate and drainage. Condensing equipment produces condensate. Drainage, neutralization and disposal requirements depend on the selected model, piping route and applicable requirements.

Electrical supply. Gas-fired tankless equipment uses electricity for controls and other model-specific functions. Fixed wiring, circuits and electrical-supply work are completed or coordinated by an appropriately licensed electrical contractor where required.

Water connections and comfort. Isolation valves, inlet filtration, pressure, existing recirculation, pipe length and fixture behaviour can affect maintenance and comfort. Recirculation options must fit the selected unit and plumbing layout.

When a Tankless Assessment Is Worthwhile

Tankless may be worth assessing when:

  • The household wants continuous heating within a correctly sized unit’s rated capacity.
  • Simultaneous demand regularly exceeds the useful capacity or recovery of the current storage tank.
  • Floor space, equipment location or the consequences of stored-water leakage matter.
  • A renovation, suite addition or planned replacement already creates an opportunity to review gas, venting, electrical and drainage infrastructure.
  • The homeowner values the operating characteristics of tankless equipment and accepts the installation and maintenance requirements.

A storage tank may remain the better choice when demand is modest, the existing infrastructure strongly favours a tank or the supporting work would outweigh the benefits the homeowner values.

Property Questions That Change the Installation

Useful questions include:

  • What is the measured or defensible incoming-water temperature used for sizing?
  • Which fixtures and appliances may require hot water at the same time?
  • What gas meter, regulator and piping serve the property, and what other gas appliances are connected?
  • Is there a practical vent route, condensate drain and suitable equipment location?
  • What electrical supply is available at the proposed location?
  • Is the property detached, a suite, a townhouse, an apartment or another strata setting?
  • What water source, treatment, maintenance history and existing recirculation arrangement are present?
  • Have renovations or appliance changes altered the mechanical space or infrastructure?

These details determine fit more reliably than citywide assumptions about water, housing, weather or gas service.

Questions to Ask Before Approving a Tankless Installation

Ask how the unit was sized, which simultaneous-demand assumptions were used and which manufacturer flow table supports the selection. Confirm how the gas supply, venting, condensate, electrical service, water connections, maintenance access and authorization route are handled. Ask which assumptions could change the scope and which equipment documents and records you will receive.

Fixture and Recirculation Compatibility

Compatibility depends on the selected unit’s activation and flow requirements, the fixture mix, piping and any recirculation system. Confirm these details during assessment rather than assuming every existing fixture and control arrangement will behave the same.

Large-Tub Demand

A large tub can create a high flow demand. The assessment must compare the desired fill rate and outlet temperature with the selected manufacturer’s performance table at the required temperature rise. Continuous heating does not remove the unit’s rated flow limit.

Tell us the current water heater and fuel, household demand, proposed location, home type, recent renovations and whether the property has existing gas, venting, electrical or recirculation infrastructure.

When to Consider a Tankless Installation Assessment

Tankless may be worth assessing when:

  • The household wants continuous heating within a correctly sized unit’s rated capacity.
  • Simultaneous demand regularly exceeds the useful capacity or recovery of the current storage tank.
  • Floor space, equipment location or the consequences of stored-water leakage matter.
  • A renovation, suite addition or planned replacement already creates an opportunity to review gas, venting, electrical and drainage infrastructure.
  • The homeowner values the operating characteristics of tankless equipment and accepts the installation and maintenance requirements.

Job steps

How the Installation Is Planned

  1. Document the demand. Identify the fixtures and appliances that may use hot water together, the current performance problem and future household plans.
  2. Assess the property. Review the existing heater, gas supply, vent path, electrical supply, drainage, equipment location, water conditions, access and any strata or renovation constraints.
  3. Compare compatible options. Use current manufacturer information to compare equipment that can meet the required temperature rise and simultaneous demand. Include storage-tank options when they remain reasonable.
  4. Define the regulated scope. The Crazy Plumber is a Technical Safety BC (TSBC) licensed gas contractor, TSBC licence No. LGA0213328. Regulated gas work follows the authorization process applicable to the work and jurisdiction. Electrical-supply work is completed or coordinated with an appropriately licensed electrical contractor where required.
  5. Install and commission the selected system. Follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions for gas, venting, condensate, electrical, water and start-up requirements.
  6. Explain operation and maintenance. Review normal controls, power limitations, error information, shutoffs and a manufacturer- and condition-based maintenance plan.

An installation may qualify for current utility or provincial incentives. Eligibility depends on the live program, customer type, utility, equipment and installation date.

Questions homeowners ask

Does a tankless water heater provide endless hot water?

A tankless water heater can heat continuously while demand remains within the selected unit’s rated capacity at the required temperature rise. Simultaneous use is the practical limit. If demand exceeds capacity, flow or outlet temperature can be affected.

How much more does a tankless water heater cost than a storage tank?

Cost depends on the selected equipment and the work required for gas supply, venting, condensate, electrical service, water connections, access and authorizations. Compare the full assessed scope with a compatible storage-tank option rather than relying on a general multiplier or payback promise.

Why does tankless hot water briefly turn cold during a shower?

A brief temperature change can involve water already in the piping, the unit’s activation and control behaviour, changing demand or the plumbing layout. Recirculation or buffer options may help in some systems, but compatibility and results depend on the selected equipment and piping.

Do tankless water heaters work during a power outage?

Most tankless equipment relies on electricity for controls and other model-specific functions. Outage behaviour, freeze protection and restart instructions depend on the appliance. Review the selected manufacturer’s documentation if outage resilience matters to the household.

Brad came over at short notice to check a leak in our faucet. It was an easier fix than we anticipated and Brad fixed it for no charge. Appreciated the honesty as we had been quoted a ridiculous amount by another local plumber. Will definitely use the Crazy Plumber for future plumbing needs.

Had an amazing experience with The Crazy Plumber today. Ryan came in and unclogged my tub drain. It has been draining so slowly regardless of my attempts to unclog it. It's amazing to see the whirlpool as the water drains again. Definitely recommend their services.
