About this service
Connect Gas Appliance
Gas appliance connection service covers the connection, disconnection or commissioning of a defined gas appliance when a suitable gas supply and usable landing point are already present. If piping must be added, extended, rerouted or resized, the work becomes gas line installation. A confirmed piping or component defect belongs with gas line repair, and broader tightness questions belong with gas line pressure testing.
The Crazy Plumber is a Technical Safety BC (TSBC) licensed gas contractor, TSBC licence No. LGA0213328. Regulated gas work follows the permit or authorization route applicable to the work and jurisdiction. The company contractor licence is distinct from the certificate or qualification held by the individual performing regulated work.
Gas Odour or Carbon Monoxide Comes First
If you smell gas or hear hissing, stop what you are doing. Do not use a cellphone, smoke, light matches, operate electrical switches or create another ignition source inside. Go outside, then call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or call 911. Do not investigate, move the appliance, operate a meter or valve, test with soap or a handheld detector, relight equipment or return for photographs. Connection service begins only after the active scene is safe and the system status is understood.
A carbon monoxide alarm or suspected exposure is a separate combustion and venting emergency, not proof of a piping leak. Get everyone outside, call 911 or FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 from outside, seek medical attention for symptoms and do not re-enter or troubleshoot equipment until emergency responders say it is safe.
What Affects Scope and Price
A prepared reconnection is different from a full appliance installation. The estimate depends on:
- Appliance type, model, input and fuel.
- Like-for-like replacement, relocation, new installation or fuel conversion.
- Condition and accessibility of the shutoff, piping and landing point.
- Whether the existing supply is suitable for the selected appliance.
- Required repair, new piping, rerouting or defined pressure testing.
- Appliance-specific venting, combustion-air, drainage, electrical, clearance or support requirements.
- Permit or authorization route for the actual work and jurisdiction.
- Built-in cabinetry, finished surfaces, appliance placement and safe working access.
- Temporary disconnection, reconnection or permanent removal of the old appliance.
The scope should separate the gas connection from corrective piping work, appliance installation requirements and adjacent-trade work so the homeowner can see what is included and what remains conditional.
Permit, Replacement and Property Boundaries
Regulated gas work follows the authorization route that applies to the actual address and scope. Technical Safety BC issues gas installation permits in most of British Columbia, while defined local authorities administer some work in their jurisdictions. Confirm the property, fuel, connected load and work before relying on a permit process.
A replacement-appliance decal may be available for an eligible like-for-like residential replacement in Technical Safety BC jurisdiction. It is not a universal route. Appliance type, fuel, contractor eligibility, piping, venting, work scope and jurisdiction must fit the current requirements.
Property conditions can also change the service:
- In a detached home, confirm whether the appliance, shutoff and nearby piping are original, renovated, moved or replaced. Construction era alone does not establish their condition.
- In a condo, townhouse or other strata property, confirm access, building procedures, shutoff control and whether any equipment or piping may be common property. Do not assume the homeowner can authorize work outside the unit’s responsibility.
- For garages, patios, workshops or detached structures, describe the appliance location and where the existing supply ends. A planned connection can become an installation project when route, capacity, protection, access or adjacent work changes.
- For built-in or vented appliances, confirm access to the appliance and any separate venting, combustion-air, drainage, electrical, cabinetry or structural scope.
How to Prepare for a Gas Appliance Connection
- Provide the appliance type, model number and a clear rating-plate photo when available. This supports planning but does not replace the on-site assessment.
- State whether the appliance is new, used, relocated, returning after renovation or replacing an existing appliance.
- Confirm whether the appliance and property use natural gas or propane.
- Describe the final appliance location and whether a usable supply, shutoff and landing point are already present.
- Share safe photographs of the location, shutoff and accessible nearby piping. Do not move an appliance or return for photographs when gas odour or another hazard is present.
- Explain whether an old appliance needs disconnection, temporary removal or permanent decommissioning.
- Identify venting, electrical, drainage, cabinetry, structural or access work that may involve another provider.
- Keep the current manufacturer instructions and model-specific supplied parts with the appliance. Do not purchase or install a generic conversion kit.
- Confirm delivery, placement and unpacking responsibilities before the appointment.
- For a strata or managed property, confirm access procedures and the appropriate building contact.
- Clear safe working access without disconnecting, converting or partially installing the appliance.
If you smell gas, hear hissing or suspect carbon monoxide, go outside and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 or call 911 before arranging contractor service.
For a planned connection, tell us the service address, property type, appliance type, model number, fuel, final location and whether a suitable gas supply and landing point are already present. Include safe photographs and relevant appliance instructions when available.

When Gas Appliance Connection Service Fits
This service may fit when:
- A range, cooktop, dryer, fireplace, barbecue, unit heater or another approved gas appliance is ready to be connected at an existing landing point.
- An appliance was disconnected for flooring, cabinetry, painting, moving or another renovation and is ready to return to its final position.
- An appliance must be disconnected and the piping left in an appropriate condition for temporary removal or permanent decommissioning.
- A used appliance needs an evidence-led assessment of its approval markings, fuel configuration, condition, parts and available instructions before connection.
- A natural gas or propane conversion is being considered for an appliance that may have an exact model-specific approved procedure and kit. Some appliances are not convertible.
- The existing connector, shutoff or nearby piping has a confirmed defect that must be repaired before connection.
The service assumes the appliance location already has a suitable gas supply and landing point. A new location, missing line, undersized supply, unsuitable route or required piping change moves the work into gas line installation.
The exact appliance matters. A model number and rating-plate photo can support planning, but they do not establish every connection, conversion, venting, electrical, drainage, clearance or commissioning requirement before the appliance and property are assessed.
Job steps
What the Connection Assessment Clarifies
- The appliance and fuel. Confirm the exact model, rating plate, approval or certification marking, fuel and current manufacturer instructions. Any conversion must use the procedure and parts approved for that exact model.
- The existing supply and landing point. Assess the accessible piping, shutoff, connection location, appliance input, route and conditions that determine whether connection can proceed. Tightness and capacity are separate questions.
- Work outside connection scope. Identify confirmed defects, new piping, rerouting, broader pressure testing or appliance-specific venting, combustion-air, drainage, electrical, structural or cabinetry work that belongs in another scope or trade.
- The authorized connection work. Select and install connection components according to the appliance, approved instructions, property conditions and applicable requirements. Generic connector or conversion rules do not fit every appliance.
- Testing and commissioning. Check the disturbed work within the authorized scope and complete the startup and operating checks required for the appliance. A burner lighting once does not by itself establish complete commissioning.
- Results and next steps. Explain the completed scope, material limitations, observed conditions and any required follow-up. Available permit or authorization records describe the work, but do not guarantee acceptance by an insurer, strata, buyer or another third party.

Questions homeowners ask
Ask who will perform the regulated gas work, whether the work is through a licensed gas contractor, what the connection scope includes and who is responsible for the applicable permit or authorization route. Appliance delivery, placement, electrical work and regulated gas connection may be separate services.
Possibly, after the exact appliance is assessed. Approval or certification markings, fuel configuration, condition, current instructions and required parts all matter. A connection appointment cannot make a damaged, incomplete or unapproved appliance suitable for use.
The duration depends on the appliance, access and what is already present. A prepared like-for-like replacement is different from a fuel conversion, built-in appliance, vented appliance, unsuitable shutoff or location that needs piping work. The scope must be confirmed before a reliable schedule can be set.
Do not loosen a gas connection or leave piping open for another trade. Disconnection and removal can be regulated alteration work, and the piping must be left in an appropriate condition. Confirm whether the appliance will return or be removed permanently so the correct scope and authorization route can be planned.
This is the second time we have hired this company and both times they did a great job. I called last night spoke to Brad and they were at my Dad's house by 8:45 a.m. the next morning. Tony did an incredible job today. He called on his way to give me his ETA, he arrived on time, he assessed the work and he provided me with prompt and very clear quotes with an explanation to me in a way I could understand. He completed the work and did a terrific job of it. So happy and relieved that the issue is fixed. He also provided some quotes for some other things in the home that need to be fixed as well and we will proceed with those in the near future as well. I work at a service company and this company and Tony specifically, did a fantastic job. What a friendly and well run business. Thank you! I highly recommend The Crazy Plumber and believe in leaving a great review when I receive great service.
