About this service

Kitchen Remodel Plumbing

Every other service we offer works within the kitchen you have. This one builds the kitchen you want. Kitchen Remodel Plumbing is the service for renovations that change where water lives: the sink moving to a new island, the range swapping walls and taking its gas or pot filler question with it, the dishwasher relocating, a second prep sink appearing, the whole room gutted to studs and replanned. It’s the largest, longest, and most collaborative service in the Kitchen Plumber category, and it’s the one where the plumbing decisions are made months before any water flows, on drawings, in sequencing meetings, and inside walls that will only be open once.

Remodel plumbing succeeds or fails on two things we keep circling back to: geometry and sequence. Geometry, because supply lines go nearly anywhere but drains obey gravity and venting rules, and the difference between a dream island and an impossible one is usually the drain’s math, best discovered at the sketch stage rather than the demolition stage. Sequence, because plumbing appears twice in every renovation, the rough-in after framing and the finish after counters, and a kitchen schedule is a chain of trades in which the plumber who shows up prepared keeps six other people on time. This page is how we run that whole arc, from the first “can the sink even go there?” to the final proving cycle on a finished kitchen.

The Three Acts of Remodel Plumbing

A kitchen renovation’s plumbing runs in three distinct phases, each with its own job.

Act one: design and demolition. Before drawings freeze, the plumbing questions get answered: can the drain reach the new sink location with legal slope and proper venting; what does the island require, under-floor access, an approved venting method, and a route that respects joists; which existing pipes are assets to reuse and which are liabilities to retire; does the project require permits under your municipality’s current rules; and what does the wall-open moment make practical to add or upgrade, such as pot filler lines, appliance connections, an extra valve, or older material that warrants attention. Then demolition, done by plumbers where plumbing is concerned: lines drained, capped safely, and removed cleanly, with the house’s water back on the same day so the family living through the renovation keeps living.

Act two: rough-in. With framing open, the new skeleton goes in: supply lines run in copper or PEX to every planned fixture and appliance, drain and vent piping cut in with real slope and code-required venting, everything supported, protected through framing with plates where screws will someday roam, and stubbed out at precise heights matched to the cabinet drawings, because a stub-out an inch wrong meets a cabinet back an inch real. Then the part that separates disciplined rough-ins from hopeful ones: pressure testing, the whole new system proven tight while every joint is still visible and touchable, inspected where permits require, photographed regardless, and only then buried in insulation and drywall.

Act three: finish. Months later, after counters, the fixtures land: the sink set to our kitchen sink installation standard, the faucet mounted and connected, the disposal installed, the dishwasher hooked up, every appliance line connected, every drain connection built with proper geometry, each one to the standard its own service page sets, followed by the full proving session, every fixture and appliance run, every joint towel-checked, on a kitchen that is now, finally, a kitchen.

What Happens If Remodel Plumbing Is Done Wrong

Renovation plumbing mistakes are construction-grade mistakes: they get sealed inside finished work and priced accordingly. The unvented or mis-vented island drain glugs, drains slowly, and siphons its trap, releasing sewer smell into a brand-new kitchen forever, or until floors reopen. The slope that isn’t there, a drain run flat to dodge a joist, clogs on a schedule for the life of the house. The untested joint buried in fresh drywall weeps into insulation for months before the paint bubbles, converting a rough-in oversight into a restoration line-item. The stub-outs placed without cabinet drawings meet the cabinets in a fistfight the plumber loses with a hole saw and the homeowner loses in millwork. A fixture relocation completed without a required permit can surface years later in a home sale’s document requests. And the falsest economy of all: leaving known-aged material, the Poly B, the corroded valves, the galvanized stub, sealed behind twenty thousand dollars of new finishes because addressing it wasn’t in the mood that week. Every one of these is a design-stage or rough-in-stage decision, which is the entire argument for having the plumber in the room early.

The Renovation Plumbing File

When your renovation ends, one artifact should outlive the dumpster: the plumbing file. Ours includes photos of every concealed line before drywall, a valve map anyone can follow, materials and installation dates, permit and inspection records, and the spec sheets of every connected appliance. It lives with your house documents, and it quietly pays for years: every future service call starts with knowledge, every insurance and strata question has an answer, and every future service visit gets easier in a house whose walls have a map. A renovation builds the kitchen; the file keeps it built.

Spot the signs

Signs You Need Remodel Plumbing

  • Any fixture is changing location. Sink, dishwasher, fridge, range: movement means new routing, and new routing means this service.
  • An island or peninsula is gaining water. This is a geometry-sensitive renovation choice that needs to be solved early.
  • The layout is opening up. Removed walls take pipe chases with them; where those lines re-route is a design-stage question.
  • You’re adding fixtures. Prep sinks, pot fillers, beverage stations, steam ovens: every addition is cheapest while the walls are open.
  • The renovation exposes original or older plumbing. A gutted kitchen may reveal older copper, worn valves, galvanized remnants, or grey supply piping that needs proper identification. Open walls create a practical moment to assess what should stay and what may be worth upgrading.
  • Your contractor asked for a plumbing quote from drawings. That’s us reading the plans, pricing the scope, and flagging the geometry problems while they’re still eraser-fixable.
  • A basement suite kitchen is being created. New kitchens from scratch need their plumbing, venting, and current municipal requirements planned as one scope.

Job steps

What The Crazy Plumber Does

  1. We join at the drawing stage. Plan review, feasibility answers on sinks and islands, guidance on your municipality’s current permit process, and a scoped, sequenced quote your contractor can build a schedule around, with the geometry problems flagged while they’re free to fix.
  2. We handle demolition’s plumbing safely. Drain-down, clean capping, protected stub-outs, and same-day water restoration for the household living through it.
  3. We rough in to the standard we keep. Correct materials, real slope, legal venting including the island’s, protection plates, precise stub-out placement from cabinet drawings, and pressure testing witnessed and photographed before anything closes.
  4. We coordinate like a trade that respects the schedule. Clear requirements to the electrician, gas fitter, cabinetmaker, and counter templater; punctual rough-in and finish dates; and no surprises hiding in our scope for the next trade to find. For strata and condo projects, we also coordinate building shutoffs, access, approval requirements, and documentation with the responsible parties.
  5. We finish through every fixture and appliance. Each one installed to its own service’s standard in one coordinated finish phase, then the full-system proving session with you watching.
  6. We document the kitchen’s new anatomy. Photos of every concealed run before closure, valve maps, materials and dates, permits and inspection records, assembled into the file that makes every future service call easier in your house.

Questions homeowners ask

Can my sink really go in the island?

Usually yes, and we’d rather prove it on paper than promise it in the air. The determinants: what’s under the kitchen floor, an unfinished basement or crawlspace makes it straightforward, a finished ceiling or slab makes it surgical; the drain’s path to the stack with legal slope; and an approved island venting method, several exist and we’ll specify the right one. Send us the floor plan and a photo of what’s below; the feasibility answer is usually same-week.

When should the plumber get involved in my renovation?

At drawings, before anything is final. The expensive remodel plumbing mistakes, impossible islands, missed permit triggers, stub-outs that fight cabinets, are all design-stage mistakes that cost nothing to fix on paper. A one-hour plan review is the highest-leverage hour in any renovation, and we price it accordingly, which is to say, gladly.

Do I need a permit to move my kitchen sink?

Permit requirements depend on the municipality and the exact scope. Moving a sink can trigger permit and inspection requirements, but we do not guess from a city list. We confirm the current process with your municipality before work begins, explain what applies to your renovation, and include required permit and inspection steps in the scope.

Can I live in my house during the kitchen renovation?

Almost everyone does, and our job is making that survivable: water off only in planned, announced windows, never overnight; a temporary sink arrangement where the schedule is long; and the household’s bathrooms untouched by kitchen work. Ask your contractor to put “water interruptions” on the schedule explicitly; we’ll have already asked them the same thing.
