About this service

Shower Head Repair

Weak spray, clogged nozzles, crooked jets, a leaking connection or a shower head that will not hold its angle are all reasons to inspect the visible end of the shower first. This service covers the shower head, the arm it threads onto and the accessible connection points. It does not include repair of the mixing valve behind the finished wall. That distinction matters because dripping that continues after the head has finished draining may point to a valve problem rather than a faulty head. We restore or replace accessible parts when appropriate and explain when the symptom needs valve service instead.

What’s Actually Up There: Head, Arm, and the Joint Between

For diagnosis, it helps to separate the accessible shower head, the shower arm and the joint between them.

The shower arm is the short pipe that extends from the finished wall and supports the head. Its visible end is accessible, while its threaded base connects to a fitting behind the wall. Moisture at that wall-line connection deserves prompt attention because water may track into concealed space. An escutcheon, the trim ring where the arm exits the wall, covers the opening and helps limit spray from reaching it.

The head threads onto the arm’s outlet. Depending on the fixture, it may include a sealing washer, an inlet screen, a flow-control component, an internal distribution chamber and a face plate of spray nozzles. Handheld and combination units add a hose, mounting bracket or slide bar and a diverter that directs water between outlets. Debris, worn seals and damaged connections can affect any of these accessible parts.

Failure follows the parts. Nozzles, screens and flow-control components can collect fine debris, especially after upstream plumbing or utility work. Washers and hose seals age. Handheld hoses may split near their connections. Arm threads can corrode, loosen or lack an effective seal. A large or frequently adjusted head can also place extra leverage on the arm, so fixture weight, reach and arm condition should be considered together.

What Happens If You Ignore It

Many shower head problems affect comfort and water use before they threaten the surrounding finishes. Moisture at the wall-line connection is the important exception.

A restricted head can make a shower less comfortable and may lead people to run it longer while trying to rinse. A leaking head-to-arm joint can direct spray toward the wall, ceiling or surrounding finishes. A drooping head or slipping bracket often gets forced back into position, which can worsen wear at the adjustment joint or arm connection. These are usually manageable repairs, but repeated use can make them worse.

The arm connection deserves more caution because it sits at the finished wall. If water is reaching that opening, it may affect concealed materials before the damage becomes visible. In a condo, townhouse or any bathroom above finished space, the consequences can extend beyond the shower itself. Moisture at the wall line should be investigated promptly. A drip that continues after normal drain-down also deserves diagnosis because the source may be the valve behind the wall rather than the head.

A Simple Check Before You Book

If you are comfortable removing the head without forcing the arm, shut the shower off and unthread the head carefully. Briefly compare the flow from the open arm with the flow you were getting through the head. Stronger flow at the arm suggests a restriction in the head. Weak flow at the arm points farther upstream. After shutoff, observe whether dripping stops after normal drain-down or continues from the arm. Do not continue if the arm moves at the wall, the threads resist or moisture appears around the opening. Those signs are better left for inspection.

Signs Your Shower Head Needs Repair

  • Weak spray at the shower only, with normal flow at other fixtures. The head’s nozzles, inlet screen or flow-control component may be restricted. If several fixtures are weak, the cause may be farther upstream. Comparing flow with the head removed helps separate a fixture restriction from a valve or supply issue.
  • Nozzles firing sideways, spitting or dead in patches. Debris or deposits may be blocking individual jets. Some heads respond well to careful cleaning. Others are better replaced when the face plate is damaged, inaccessible or not serviceable. Shower Head Installation covers the replacement and mounting work.
  • A drip or spray from the joint where the head meets the arm. A worn washer, damaged thread or poor seal may be the cause. It is worth correcting because spray can reach the wall rather than falling cleanly into the shower area.
  • Water weeping at the base of the arm, where it enters the finished wall. This needs prompt attention. Water at the wall line may be coming from the arm connection or may be reaching the opening from another source. Either way, concealed materials could be affected, so the source should be checked rather than covered with more caulk.
  • The head sags, droops or will not hold its angle. The adjustment joint may be worn, the mounting connection may be loose or the head may place more leverage on the existing arm than the assembly can comfortably support.
  • Handheld problems: a hose that leaks at either end, a bracket that won’t grip, a diverter that won’t switch cleanly between fixed and handheld or leaks from its body while running.
  • Dripping that continues after normal drain-down. Water held inside the head can drain after shutoff. If dripping continues beyond that normal drain-down, the mixing valve may not be sealing fully. Shower Valve Repair covers that diagnosis and repair.

Job steps

What The Crazy Plumber Does

  1. We separate head problems from valve problems first. With the head removed, we compare flow at the arm with flow through the fixture and observe what happens after shutoff. That helps distinguish a restricted head from a valve or supply problem before parts are recommended.
  2. We restore before we replace. Where the fixture can be serviced safely, we clean accessible nozzles and screens, clear debris and renew worn sealing washers. If cleaning solves the problem, there is no reason to sell a replacement.
  3. We reseal accessible joints carefully. The head-to-arm connection is inspected for washer, thread and sealing problems. If the arm connection is suspect, we assess whether the arm can be removed, resealed or replaced without damaging the fitting behind the wall. Connections are tightened carefully because excess force can damage finishes or fittings.
  4. We check the wall-line risk. We investigate moisture at the finished wall, inspect the escutcheon and accessible seal and look for signs such as staining, softness or odour. If the evidence points beyond the visible fixture, we explain the likely next diagnostic step instead of covering the symptom with caulk.
  5. We assess handheld systems as systems. Hoses, brackets, slide bars and arm-mounted diverters are checked together because one worn connection can affect the performance of the rest. We explain which accessible part can be repaired or replaced and whether the existing mounting arrangement is still suitable.
  6. We tell you when repair is not the sensible answer. A badly corroded head, a damaged fixture that cannot be serviced or a unit you already want to change may be better handled through Shower Head Installation. We explain that choice before spending labour on a repair that is unlikely to be worthwhile.

Questions homeowners ask

My shower head drips for hours after I shut the water off. Can you fix the head?

We can diagnose it, but the head may not be the source. A shower head can release water while it drains after shutoff. If dripping continues after that normal drain-down, the valve behind the wall may not be sealing fully. Repairing or replacing the head will not correct a valve leak, so Shower Valve Repair may be the appropriate service once the cause is confirmed.

Why is my shower spray so weak when the sinks are fine?

If other fixtures have normal flow, the restriction may be local to the shower head, such as blocked nozzles, a clogged inlet screen or debris in a flow-control component. Comparing flow at the arm with flow through the head helps locate the restriction. Weak flow at the arm points farther upstream, where the valve or supply may need investigation.

Can I clean the shower head myself with vinegar?

Sometimes. Gentle cleaning can help with accessible nozzle deposits, but follow the fixture manufacturer’s care instructions because finishes and internal materials vary. Stop if the face plate does not come apart easily, the leak is at the arm connection or the arm itself needs to be removed. Work at the wall-line threads can create a larger leak if the concealed fitting is stressed.

There’s water coming from where the pipe meets the wall. Is that serious?

Treat this differently from a leak that falls directly into the shower. Water at the wall line may be entering concealed space, although the exact path still needs to be confirmed. The repair may be as limited as resealing or replacing the arm, but the source should be inspected promptly, especially in multi-unit buildings or bathrooms above finished space.

I had an amazing experience with The Crazy Plumber, specifically Brad, who truly lived up to the name (in the best way possible). He was incredibly fast, reliable, and affordable, which is already a win, but what really stood out was how kind and easygoing he was throughout the whole process. Within minutes of arriving, he was hauling what looked like a 400-pound auger machine up two flights of stairs like it was part of his daily workout routine. Honestly, I was impressed before he even started the job. The clog didn’t stand a chance. He handled it quickly and efficiently, and before I knew it, everything was working perfectly again. In and out, no stress, no mess. Bonus points: professional, friendly… and not hard on the eyes either 😉 If you’re looking for someone who gets the job done right (and makes the whole experience surprisingly pleasant), Brad at The Crazy Plumber is your guy. Highly recommend! 🐝💜🫶🏻
