Most homes run into the same handful of plumbing problems. Knowing what causes them helps you decide whether it is a quick fix or time to call a plumber.
1. Dripping faucets
A drip is usually caused by a worn washer, O-ring or cartridge inside the faucet. It wastes water and can stain sinks. Many faucets can be repaired, but older or discontinued models may be better replaced. See faucet leak repair.
2. Running toilets
A toilet that keeps running or refills on its own often has a worn flapper or a fill valve that needs adjusting or replacing. A running toilet can waste a lot of water over a day, so it is worth fixing promptly. See toilet repair.
3. Slow or clogged drains
Hair and soap in bathroom drains, and grease and food in kitchen drains, are the usual culprits. Try a plunger or cleaning the trap first. If the problem returns or affects several drains, the blockage is likely further down. See what to try first for a clogged sink.
4. Low water pressure
Low pressure at one fixture often points to a clogged aerator or showerhead. Low pressure throughout the house can involve the pressure regulator, a supply problem or aging pipes. See low water pressure causes.
5. Noisy pipes
Banging when a tap shuts off, sometimes called water hammer, can be caused by high water pressure or loose pipe supports. It is worth checking because repeated shock can stress fittings over time.
6. Water heater problems
Running out of hot water, rumbling noises or water around the tank are common issues. See when to replace your water heater.
7. Leaks under sinks
Loose slip nuts, worn supply lines and failing shutoff valves are frequent causes. Check under sinks every few months for moisture or staining.
When to call a plumber
- The same problem keeps coming back.
- More than one fixture is affected.
- You see water damage, staining or mould.
- A repair would mean working on gas, the water heater or the main line.
